Stinginess 3

Translated from the Pali by Thanissaro Bhikkhu.
Provenance, terms and conditons

[1][pts] "Without abandoning these five qualities,
one is incapable of entering and remaining
in the first jhāna.

Which five?

Stinginess as to one's monastery [lodgings],
stinginess as to one's family [of supporters],
stinginess as to one's gains,
stinginess as to one's status,
and stinginess as to the Dhamma.

Without abandoning these five qualities,
one is incapable of entering and remaining
in the first jhāna.

"With the abandoning of these five qualities,
one is capable of entering and remaining
in the first jhāna.

Which five?

Stinginess as to one's monastery [lodgings],
stinginess as to one's family [of supporters],
stinginess as to one's gains,
stinginess as to one's status,
and stinginess as to the Dhamma.

With the abandoning of these five qualities,
one is capable of entering and remaining
in the first jhāna."

[ed1] Bhk. Thanissaro has suttas #254-259 grouped in one file and notes: The suttas in this section of the Fives are formulaic, and the Canon does not give them names. The following group of suttas deals with the topic of stinginess, and so I have named the group after their topic.
