'Atthi Nu Kho Pariyāyo?' Suttaṃ
'Is There A Curiculum?'
Translated from the Pāḷi
by
Michael M. Olds
Once upon a time, The Lucky man,
Sāvatthi-town revisiting,
Jeta Grove,
Anathapiṇḍika's Sporting Grounds.
There then The Lucky Man addressed the beggars, saying:
"Beggars!"
And the beggars responding "Bhante!"
The Lucky Man said this to them:
"Is there then, beggars,
a curiculum
whereby using such curiculum
a beggar,
other than through faith,
other than through finding it pleasing,
other than through hearsay,
other than by a construction
of thorough thought,
other than through yielding to
pleasing wrong views,
could declare omnicience thus:
'Left behind is rebirth,
lived is the godly life,
done is duty's doing,
no further will there be it'n-n-at'n.'"
"For us bhante,
things are best resorted to
rooted in The Lucky Man,
channeled through The Lucky Man.
It would be good, bhante,
if further explanation of this point
were given by The Lucky Man.
That which is said
by the Lucky Man
will be held in memory
by the beggars."
"Then give ear, beggars,
pay good attention!
I will speak!"
Then, the beggars saying
"Even so, bhante!"
in response,
the Lucky Man said this to them:
"There is, beggars,
a curiculum
whereby using such curiculum
a beggar,
other than through faith,
other than through finding it pleasing,
other than through hearsay,
other than by a construction
of thorough thought,

could declare omnicience thus:
'Left behind is rebirth,
lived is the godly life,

no further will there be it'n-n-at'n.'
And what is that curiculum
whereby using such curiculum
a beggar,
other than through faith,

other than through hearsay,
other than by a construction
of thorough thought,
other than through yielding to
pleasing wrong views,
could declare omnicience thus:
'Left behind is rebirth,

Here beggars, a beggar
seeing a form with the eye,
there being subjective
lust, anger or confusion,
knows:
'There is within,
lust, anger, or confusiion.'
or
There not being subjective
lust, anger or confusion,
knows:
'There is not within,
lust, anger, or confusiion.'
It being the case, beggars,
that a beggar
seeing a form with the eye,
there being subjective

'There is within,

There not being subjective

Does it then follow that
these things were
experienced through faith,
experienced through finding it pleasing,
experienced through hearsay,
experienced by a construction
of thorough thought,
experienced through yielding to
pleasing wrong views?"
"It would not be thus, bhante."
"Is it not the case, beggars,
that these things rather indecate
experience through wisdom?"
"Even so, bhante."
This, then, beggars,
is that curiculum
whereby using such curiculum

other than through faith,
