Paṭhama Nandi-k-Khaya Suttaṃ (Ajjhatta)[1]

The Destruction of Taking Enjoyment in the Internal

Translated from the Pāḷi
by
Michael M. Olds

[1][pts] I Hear Tell:

Once upon a time, Lucky Man,
Sāvatthi-town revisiting,
Anāthapiṇḍika's Jeta grove.

There to the Beggars gathered round,
he said:

"Bhikkhus!"

And upon the bhikkhus responding "Bhante!" Bhagava said:

"Whenever, beggars,
a beggar sees the unreliable[2] eye
as unreliable,
he has achieved consummate view.

With seeing consummately
comes satiation.[3]

In the destruction of taking enjoyment,
the destruction of lust
in the destruction of lust,
the destruction of taking enjoyment.

With the destruction
of taking enjoyment in lust,
the heart is called
'Well-freed'.

Whenever, beggars,
a beggar sees the unreliable ear
as unreliable,
he has achieved consummate view.

With seeing consummately
comes satiation.

In the destruction of taking enjoyment,
the destruction of lust
in the destruction of lust,
the destruction of taking enjoyment.

With the destruction
of taking enjoyment in lust,
the heart is called
'Well-freed'.

Whenever, beggars,
a beggar sees the unreliable nose
as unreliable,
he has achieved consummate view.

With seeing consummately
comes satiation.

In the destruction of taking enjoyment,
the destruction of lust
in the destruction of lust,
the destruction of taking enjoyment.

With the destruction
of taking enjoyment in lust,
the heart is called
'Well-freed'.

Whenever, beggars,
a beggar sees the unreliable tongue
as unreliable,
he has achieved consummate view.

With seeing consummately
comes satiation.

In the destruction of taking enjoyment,
the destruction of lust
in the destruction of lust,
the destruction of taking enjoyment.

With the destruction
of taking enjoyment in lust,
the heart is called
'Well-freed'.

Whenever, beggars,
a beggar sees the unreliable body
as unreliable,
he has achieved consummate view.

With seeing consummately
comes satiation.

In the destruction of taking enjoyment,
the destruction of lust
in the destruction of lust,
the destruction of taking enjoyment.

With the destruction
of taking enjoyment in lust,
the heart is called
'Well-freed'.

Whenever, beggars,
a beggar sees the unreliable mind
as unreliable,
he has achieved consummate view.

With seeing consummately
comes satiation.

In the destruction of taking enjoyment,
the destruction of lust
in the destruction of lust,
the destruction of taking enjoyment.

With the destruction
of taking enjoyment in lust,
the heart is called
'Well-freed'."

[1] BJT calls this the Ajjhatta-nandi-k-khaya-Dukkha Suttaṃ and in stead of Anicca has Dukkha throughout.

[2] A new take on 'anicca'.

[3] nibbindati nis + vindati; nis = put down, end, extinguish; vindati = to know. Here the point where the search for things to take enjoyment in has achieved satisfaction. The point where one can no longer be fooled by the hope of finding lasting enjoyment in any sense experience. The word used here must bridge the gap between seeing consummately and having achieved the destruction of taking enjoyment in sense experiences.
