Realization

[1][olds] Thus have I heard:

On a certain occasion the Exalted One was staying near Sāvatthī.

Then the Exalted One addressed the monks, saying:

"Monks."

"Yes, lord," they replied, and the Exalted One said:

"Monks, there are these four things which are to be realized.

What four?

There are things to be realized by one's own person,^[1]
by recollection,
by sight,
and there are things to be realized by wisdom.

[191] And of what sort, monka,
are the things to be realized
by one's own person?

The eight releases
are to be realized
by one's own person.

And of what sort, monks,
are the things to be realized
by recollection?

One's former life
is to be realized
by recollection.

And of what sort, monks,
are the things to be realized
by sight?^[2]

The decease and rebirth^[3] of beings
are to be realized
by sight.

And of what sort, monks,
are the things to be realized
by wisdom?

The destruction of the āsavas
are to be realized
by wisdom.

These are the four things to be realized.'
