[1] Thus have I heard:
Once the Exalted One dwelt near Sāvatthī;
and there he addressed the monks, saying:
"Monks."
'Yes, lord,' they replied;
and the Exalted One said:
"Monks, these five conditions
lead to the decline
of a monk in training.
What five?
Delight in business;[1]
delight in gossip;
delight in sleeping;
delight in company;
and he does not reflect on the mind as freed.[2]
Monks, these are the five conditions,
that lead to the decline
of a monk in training.
§
Monks, these five conditions
do not lead to the decline
of a monk in training.
What five?
Non-delight in business;
Non-delight in gossip;
Non-delight in sleeping;
Non-delight in company;
and he does reflect on the mind as freed.
Monks, these are the five conditions,
that do not lead to the decline
of a monk in training.
[1] Cf. A. iv, 22; It. 72; below VI, §§ 14, 21. Busmess = kamma.
Yathāvimuttaṃ cittaṃ. Or, perhaps: [He does not reflect on] whatever frees the heart/mind.
— p.p.
[2] Yathāvimuttaṃ cittaṃ na paccavekkhati. Comy. as if it were a mind freed (yathāssa cittaṃ vimuttaṃ); the faults got rid of and the good won — he reflects on those, but makes no effort to win higher ones. Cf. below V, § 95 ff.
