[1] Thus have I heard:
Once the Exalted One dwelt near Sāvatthī;
in Jeta Grove at Anāthapiṇḍika's Park,
he addressed the monks, saying:
"Monks."
'Yes, lord,' they replied; and the Exalted One said:
Monks, following five,
a layman is duly thrown into hell.
What five?'
He takes life,
takes what is not given,
is given over to lusts of the flesh,
lies
and takes spirituous liquors that cause indolence.
Monks, following these five things,
a layman is duly thrown into hell.'
§
"Monks, following five things,
a layman is duly thrown into heaven.
What five?
He abstains from taking life,
abstains from taking what is not given,
abstains from lusts of the flesh,
lies
and he abstains from taking spirituous liquors that cause indolence.
Monks, following these five things,
a layman is duly thrown into heaven.'
