[411.1] Thus have I heard:
Once the Exalted One dwelt near Sāvatthī;
and there he addressed the monks, saying:
"Monks."
'Yes, lord,' they replied;
and the Exalted One said:
''Monks, for the full understanding of hatred
five things ought to be made to become.
What five?
The thought of the unattractive,
of death,
of perils,
of the cloying of food,
of there being no real joy in the whole world.
Verily, monks, for the full understanding of hatred
these five things ought to be made to become.'

the governance by energy,
the governance by mindfulness,
the governance by concentration
the governance by insight.
Verily, monks, for the quittance of hatred
these five things ought to be made to become.'

[456.1] Thus have I heard:
Once the Exalted One dwelt near Sāvatthī;
and there he addressed the monks, saying:
"Monks."
'Yes, lord,' they replied;
and the Exalted One said:
''Monks, for the renunciation of hatred
five things ought to be made to become.
What five?
The thought of the unattractive,
of death,
of perils,
of the cloying of food,
of there being no real joy in the whole world.
Verily, monks, for the renunciation of hatred
these five things ought to be made to become.'
