[1][bodh] Thus have I heard:

The Exalted One was once staying near Sāvatthī
at the Jeta Grove in Anāthapiṇḍika's Park.

And there the Exalted One addressed the brethren, saying:

"Brethren!"

"Master!" responded those brethren.

The Exalted One said:

"I will teach you, brethren,
the bases of knowledge in sevenfold groups.

Listen to this,
give your minds thoroughly,
and I will speak."

"Even so, lord",
responded the brethren.

The Exalted One spake this: [43]

"What are the bases of knowledge in sevenfold groups?

Knowledge that decay-and-death
is conditioned by birth.

Knowledge that where birth is not
there is no decay-and-death.

Knowledge that in times gone by also
decay-and-death were conditioned by birth.

Knowledge that in times gone by
where birth was not
there was no decay-and-death.

Knowledge that in time to come also
decay-and-death will be conditioned by birth.

Knowledge that in time to come
where birth is not
there will be no decay-and-death.

Whatever is knowledge of the law of cause,
that is also knowledge of that which is by nature
perishable,
transient,
fading away,
tending to cease.

Knowledge that birth
is conditioned by becoming.

Knowledge that where becoming is not
there is no birth.

Knowledge that in times gone by also
birth was conditioned by becoming.

Knowledge that in times gone by
where becoming was not
there was no birth.

Knowledge that in time to come also
birth will be conditioned by becoming.

Knowledge that in time to come
where becoming is not
there will be no birth.

Whatever is knowledge of the law of cause,
that is also knowledge of that which is by nature
perishable,
transient,
fading away,
tending to cease.

Knowledge that becoming
is conditioned by grasping.

Knowledge that where grasping is not
there is no becoming.

Knowledge that in times gone by also
becoming was conditioned by grasping.

Knowledge that in times gone by
where grasping was not
there was no becoming.

Knowledge that in time to come also
becoming will be conditioned by grasping.

Knowledge that in time to come
where grasping is not
there will be no becoming.

Whatever is knowledge of the law of cause,
that is also knowledge of that which is by nature
perishable,
transient,
fading away,
tending to cease.

Knowledge that grasping
is conditioned by craving.

Knowledge that where craving is not
there is no grasping.

Knowledge that in times gone by also
grasping was conditioned by craving.

Knowledge that in times gone by
where craving was not
there was no grasping.

Knowledge that in time to come also
grasping will be conditioned by craving.

Knowledge that in time to come
where craving is not
there will be no grasping.

Whatever is knowledge of the law of cause,
that is also knowledge of that which is by nature
perishable,
transient,
fading away,
tending to cease.

Knowledge that craving
is conditioned by feeling.

Knowledge that where feeling is not
there is no craving.

Knowledge that in times gone by also
craving was conditioned by feeling.

Knowledge that in times gone by
where feeling was not
there was no craving.

Knowledge that in time to come also
craving will be conditioned by feeling.

Knowledge that in time to come
where feeling is not
there will be no craving.

Whatever is knowledge of the law of cause,
that is also knowledge of that which is by nature
perishable,
transient,
fading away,
tending to cease.

Knowledge that feeling
is conditioned by contact.

Knowledge that where contact is not
there is no feeling.

Knowledge that in times gone by also
feeling was conditioned by contact.

Knowledge that in times gone by
where contact was not
there was no feeling.

Knowledge that in time to come also
feeling will be conditioned by contact.

Knowledge that in time to come
where contact is not
there will be no feeling.

Whatever is knowledge of the law of cause,
that is also knowledge of that which is by nature
perishable,
transient,
fading away,
tending to cease.

Knowledge that contact
is conditioned by sixfold sense.

Knowledge that where sixfold sense is not
there is no contact.

Knowledge that in times gone by also
contact was conditioned by sixfold sense.

Knowledge that in times gone by
where sixfold sense was not
there was no contact.

Knowledge that in time to come also
contact will be conditioned by sixfold sense.

Knowledge that in time to come
where sixfold sense is not
there will be no contact.

Whatever is knowledge of the law of cause,
that is also knowledge of that which is by nature
perishable,
transient,
fading away,
tending to cease.

Knowledge that sixfold sense
is conditioned by name-and-shape.

Knowledge that where name-and-shape is not
there is no sixfold sense.

Knowledge that in times gone by also
sixfold sense was conditioned by name-and-shape.

Knowledge that in times gone by
where name-and-shape was not
there was no sixfold sense.

Knowledge that in time to come also
sixfold sense will be conditioned by name-and-shape.

Knowledge that in time to come
where name-and-shape is not
there will be no sixfold sense.

Whatever is knowledge of the law of cause,
that is also knowledge of that which is by nature
perishable,
transient,
fading away,
tending to cease.

Knowledge that name-and-shape
is conditioned by consciousness.

Knowledge that where consciousness is not
there is no name-and-shape.

Knowledge that in times gone by also
name-and-shape was conditioned by consciousness.

Knowledge that in times gone by
where consciousness was not
there was no name-and-shape.

Knowledge that in time to come also
name-and-shape will be conditioned by consciousness.

Knowledge that in time to come
where consciousness is not
there will be no name-and-shape.

Whatever is knowledge of the law of cause,
that is also knowledge of that which is by nature
perishable,
transient,
fading away,
tending to cease.

Knowledge that consciousness
is conditioned by activities.

Knowledge that where activities is not
there is no consciousness.

Knowledge that in times gone by also
consciousness was conditioned by activities.

Knowledge that in times gone by
where activities was not
there was no consciousness.

Knowledge that in time to come also
consciousness will be conditioned by activities.

Knowledge that in time to come
where activities is not
there will be no consciousness.

Whatever is knowledge of the law of cause,
that is also knowledge of that which is by nature
perishable,
transient,
fading away,
tending to cease.

Knowledge that activities
are conditioned by ignorance.

Knowledge that where ignorance is not
there are no activities.

Knowledge that in times gone by also
activities were conditioned by ignorance.

Knowledge that in times gone by
where ignorance was not
there were no activities.

Knowledge that in time to come also
activities will be conditioned by ignorance.

Knowledge that in time to come
where ignorance is not
there will be no activities.

Whatever is knowledge of the law of cause,
that is also knowledge of that which is by nature
perishable,
transient,
fading away,
tending to cease."
