1. Decay-and-Death
[1] Thus have I heard:
The Exalted One was once staying near Sāvatthī
at the Jeta Grove in Anāthapiṇḍika's Park.
And there the Exalted One addressed the brethren, saying:
"Brethren!"
"Master!" responded those brethren.
The Exalted One said:
"By him who knows not,
who sees not
decay-and-death as it really is, brethren,
there must be perseverance,
for knowledge about decay-and-death as it really is;
By him who knows not,
who sees not
the uprising of decay-and-death as it really is, brethren,
there must be perseverance,
for knowledge about the uprising of decay-and-death as it really is;
By him who knows not,
who sees not
the ceasing of decay-and-death as it really is, brethren,
there must be perseverance,
for knowledge about the ceasing of decay-and-death as it really is;
By him who knows not,
who sees not
the way going to the ceasing of decay-and-death as it really is, brethren,
there must be perseverance,
for knowledge about the way going to the ceasing of decay-and-death as it really is."

"By him who knows not,
who sees not
birth as it really is, brethren,
there must be perseverance,
for knowledge about birth as it really is;
By him who knows not,
who sees not
the uprising of birth as it really is, brethren,
there must be perseverance,
for knowledge about the uprising of birth as it really is;
By him who knows not,
who sees not
the ceasing of birth as it really is, brethren,
there must be perseverance,
for knowledge about the ceasing of birth as it really is;
By him who knows not,
who sees not
the way going to the ceasing of birth as it really is, brethren,
there must be perseverance,
for knowledge about the way going to the ceasing of birth as it really is."

becoming as it really is, brethren,
there must be perseverance,
for knowledge about becoming as it really is;

the uprising of becoming as it really is, brethren,

the ceasing of becoming as it really is, brethren,
there must be perseverance,
