Sutta 33

Jāti Suttaṃ

Birth

[33.1][bodh] Thus have I heard:

The Exalted One was once staying near Sāvatthī, at Jeta Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's Park.

Then the Exalted One addressed the brethren, saying:

"Brethren."

"Lord," responded those brethren to the Exalted One.

The Exalted One said:

"The all, Brethren,
is subject to rebirth.[1]

What all?

The eye, Brethren,
is subject to rebirth,
objects are subject to rebirth,
eye-consciousness is subject to rebirth,
eye-contact is subject to rebirth

"That weal or woe or neutral state experienced,
that arises from eye-contact,
is subject to rebirth.

The ear, Brethren,
is subject to rebirth,
sounds are subject to rebirth,
ear-consciousness is subject to rebirth,
ear-contact is subject to rebirth

"That weal or woe or neutral state experienced,
that arises from ear-contact,
is subject to rebirth.

The nose, Brethren,
is subject to rebirth,
scents are subject to rebirth,
nose-consciousness is subject to rebirth,
nose-contact is subject to rebirth

"That weal or woe or neutral state experienced,
that arises from nose-contact,
is subject to rebirth.

The tongue, Brethren,
is subject to rebirth,
savours are subject to rebirth,
tongue-consciousness is subject to rebirth,
tongue-contact is subject to rebirth

"That weal or woe or neutral state experienced,
that arises from tongue-contact,
is subject to rebirth.

The body, Brethren,
is subject to rebirth,
things tactile are subject to rebirth,
body-consciousness is subject to rebirth,
body-contact is subject to rebirth

"That weal or woe or neutral state experienced,
that arises from body-contact,
is subject to rebirth.

The mind, Brethren,
is subject to rebirth,
mind-states are subject to rebirth,
mind-consciousness is subject to rebirth,
mind-contact is subject to rebirth

"That weal or woe or neutral state experienced,
that arises from mind-contact,
is subject to rebirth.

§

So seeing, brethren, the well-taught Ariyan disciple
is repelled by the eye,
is repelled by objects,
is repelled by eye-consciousness,
is repelled by eye-contact,
is repelled by that weal or woe or neutral state experienced,
which arises owing to eye-contact.

So seeing, brethren, the well-taught Ariyan disciple
is repelled by the ear,
is repelled by sounds,
is repelled by ear-consciousness,
is repelled by ear-contact,
is repelled by that weal or woe or neutral state experienced,
which arises owing to ear-contact.

So seeing, brethren, the well-taught Ariyan disciple
is repelled by the nose,
is repelled by scents,
is repelled by nose-consciousness,
is repelled by nose-contact,

which arises owing to nose-contact.

So seeing, brethren, the well-taught Ariyan disciple
is repelled by the tongue,
is repelled by savours,
is repelled by tongue-consciousness,
is repelled by tongue-contact,
is repelled by that weal or woe or neutral state experienced,
which arises owing to tongue-contact.

So seeing, brethren, the well-taught Ariyan disciple
is repelled by the body,
is repelled by things tactile,
is repelled by body-consciousness,
is repelled by body-contact,
is repelled by that weal or woe or neutral state experienced,
which arises owing to body-contact.

is repelled by the mind,
is repelled by mind-states,
is repelled by mind-consciousness,
is repelled by mind-contact,
is repelled by that weal or woe or neutral state experienced,
which arises owing to mind-contact.

§

Being repelled by these,
he lusts not for them.

Not lusting he is set free.

In this freedom
comes insight
that it is a being free.

Thus he realizes:

'Rebirth is destroyed,
lived is the righteous life,
done is the task.

For life in these conditions
there is no hereafter.'"

Being repelled by these,
he lusts not for them.

Not lusting he is set free.

In this freedom
comes insight

Thus he realizes:

lived is the righteous life,
done is the task.

For life in these conditions
there is no hereafter.'"

[1] Jāti-dhammo: - dhamma = having the quality of, the rule of; hence 'subject to,' 'liable to.'
Supra, p. 11, n. 3. For the Ātmaṇ-view of the Hindus see Deussen, Philosophy of the Upanishads (the Ātman and the organs), p. 265. Comy.'s comment on 'the all' evidently refers to that view.
