[1][bodh] At Sāvatthī was the occasion (for this discourse)

Then the venerable Rādha came to see the Exalted One,
and on coming to him
saluted him
and sat down at one side.

As he sat at one side he said to the Exalted One: -

"Well for me, lord, if the Exalted One would teach me a teaching in brief,
hearing which I might dwell
remote and earnest,
ardent and aspiring."

"What is void of self, Rādha, -
for that you must abandon desire.

And what is void of self, Radha?

The eye is void of self,
for that you must abandon desire.

Objects are void of self,
for them you must abandon desire.

Eye-consciousness is void of self,
for that you must abandon desire.

Eye-contact is void of self,
for that you must abandon desire.

"That weal or woe or neutral state experienced,
which arises owing to eye-contact is void of self,
for that you must abandon desire.

The ear is void of self,
for that you must abandon desire.

Sounds are void of self,
for them you must abandon desire.

Ear-consciousness is void of self,
for that you must abandon desire.

Ear-contact is void of self,
for that you must abandon desire.

"That weal or woe or neutral state experienced,
which arises owing to ear-contact is void of self,
for that you must abandon desire.

The nose is void of self,
for that you must abandon desire.

Scents are void of self,
for them you must abandon desire.

Nose-consciousness is void of self,
for that you must abandon desire.

Nose-contact is void of self,
for that you must abandon desire.

"That weal or woe or neutral state experienced,
which arises owing to nose-contact is void of self,
for that you must abandon desire.

The tongue is void of self,
for that you must abandon desire.

Savours are void of self,
for them you must abandon desire.

Tongue-consciousness is void of self,
for that you must abandon desire.

Tongue-contact is void of self,
for that you must abandon desire.

"That weal or woe or neutral state experienced,
which arises owing to tongue-contact is void of self,
for that you must abandon desire.

The body is void of self,
for that you must abandon desire.

Tangibles are void of self,
for them you must abandon desire.

Body-consciousness is void of self,
for that you must abandon desire.

Body-contact is void of self,
for that you must abandon desire.

"That weal or woe or neutral state experienced,
which arises owing to body-contact is void of self,
for that you must abandon desire.

The mind is void of self,
for that you must abandon desire.

Mind-states are void of self,
for them you must abandon desire.

Mind-consciousness is void of self,
for that you must abandon desire.

Mind-contact is void of self,
for that you must abandon desire.

"That weal or woe or neutral state experienced,
which arises owing to mind-contact is void of self,
for that you must abandon desire.

What is void of self,
you must abandon desire for that."
