[1][bodh] At Sāvatthī was the occasion (for this discourse)

Then a certain brother came to see the Exalted One,
and on coming to him
saluted him
and sat down at one side.

As he sat at one side he said to the Exalted One: -

"Is there, lord, any one thing
which must be abandoned;
by abandoning which
ignorance is abandoned
and knowledge springs up in a brother?"

"There is indeed, brother, one thing
which must be abandoned;
by abandoning which
ignorance is abandoned
and knowledge springs up in a brother."

"What then lord, is that one thing
which must be abandoned;
by abandoning which
ignorance is abandoned
and knowledge springs up in a brother?"

"Ignorance, brother, is that one thing
which must be abandoned;
by abandoning which
ignorance is abandoned
and knowledge springs up in a brother."

"But how knowing, lord,
how seeing,
does a brother abandon ignorance
so that knowledge arises?"

"By knowing, by seeing eye as impermanent, brother,
ignorance is abandoned
and knowledge arises in a brother.

By knowing, by seeing objects as impermanent, brother,
ignorance is abandoned
and knowledge arises in a brother.

By knowing, by seeing eye-consciousness as impermanent, brother,
ignorance is abandoned
and knowledge arises in a brother.

By knowing, by seeing eye-contact as impermanent, brother,
ignorance is abandoned
and knowledge arises in a brother.

By knowing, by seeing that weal
or woe
or neutral state
arising owing to eye-contact as impermanent, brother,
ignorance is abandoned
and knowledge arises in a brother.

By knowing, by seeing ear as impermanent, brother,
ignorance is abandoned
and knowledge arises in a brother.

By knowing, by seeing sounds as impermanent, brother,
ignorance is abandoned
and knowledge arises in a brother.

By knowing, by seeing ear-consciousness as impermanent, brother,
ignorance is abandoned
and knowledge arises in a brother.

By knowing, by seeing ear-contact as impermanent, brother,
ignorance is abandoned
and knowledge arises in a brother.

By knowing, by seeing that weal
or woe
or neutral state
arising owing to ear-contact as impermanent, brother,
ignorance is abandoned
and knowledge arises in a brother.

By knowing, by seeing nose as impermanent, brother,
ignorance is abandoned
and knowledge arises in a brother.

By knowing, by seeing scents as impermanent, brother,
ignorance is abandoned
and knowledge arises in a brother.

By knowing, by seeing nose-consciousness as impermanent, brother,
ignorance is abandoned
and knowledge arises in a brother.

By knowing, by seeing nose-contact as impermanent, brother,
ignorance is abandoned
and knowledge arises in a brother.

By knowing, by seeing that weal
or woe
or neutral state
arising owing to nose-contact as impermanent, brother,
ignorance is abandoned
and knowledge arises in a brother.

By knowing, by seeing tongue as impermanent, brother,
ignorance is abandoned
and knowledge arises in a brother.

By knowing, by seeing savours as impermanent, brother,
ignorance is abandoned
and knowledge arises in a brother.

By knowing, by seeing tongue-consciousness as impermanent, brother,
ignorance is abandoned
and knowledge arises in a brother.

By knowing, by seeing tongue-contact as impermanent, brother,
ignorance is abandoned
and knowledge arises in a brother.

By knowing, by seeing that weal
or woe
or neutral state
arising owing to tongue-contact as impermanent, brother,
ignorance is abandoned
and knowledge arises in a brother.

By knowing, by seeing body as impermanent, brother,
ignorance is abandoned
and knowledge arises in a brother.

By knowing, by seeing tangibles as impermanent, brother,
ignorance is abandoned
and knowledge arises in a brother.

By knowing, by seeing body-consciousness as impermanent, brother,
ignorance is abandoned
and knowledge arises in a brother.

By knowing, by seeing body-contact as impermanent, brother,
ignorance is abandoned
and knowledge arises in a brother.

By knowing, by seeing that weal
or woe
or neutral state
arising owing to body-contact as impermanent, brother,
ignorance is abandoned
and knowledge arises in a brother.

By knowing, by seeing mind as impermanent, brother,
ignorance is abandoned
and knowledge arises in a brother.

By knowing, by seeing mind-states as impermanent, brother,
ignorance is abandoned
and knowledge arises in a brother.

By knowing, by seeing mind-consciousness as impermanent, brother,
ignorance is abandoned
and knowledge arises in a brother.

By knowing, by seeing mind-contact as impermanent, brother,
ignorance is abandoned
and knowledge arises in a brother.

By knowing, by seeing that weal
or woe
or neutral state
arising owing to mind-contact as impermanent, brother,
ignorance is abandoned
and knowledge arises in a brother.

So seeing, brother,
so knowing,
ignorance is abandoned
and knowledge arises in a brother."
