[1] Thus have I heard:

Once the Exalted One was staying near Rājagaha in Jivaka's Mango Grove.

Then a certain brother came to see the Exalted One
on coming to him greeted him courteously,
and after the exchange of greetings and compliments
sat down at one side.

Seated at one side he said to the Exalted One:

"Pray, lord, how knowing,
how seeing,
does one abandon speculation about the self?"

"By knowing,
by seeing the eye as impermanent, brother
speculation about the self is abandoned.

By knowing,
by seeing objects as impermanent
speculation about the self is abandoned.

By knowing,
by seeing the eye-consciousness as impermanent
speculation about the self is abandoned.

By knowing,
by seeing the eye-contact as impermanent
speculation about the self is abandoned.

By knowing,
by seeing the eye-consciousness as impermanent
speculation about the self is abandoned.

By knowing,
by seeing the weal or woe or neutral state experienced
that arises owing to eye-contact as impermanent
speculation about the self is abandoned.

By knowing,
by seeing the ear as impermanent, brother
speculation about the self is abandoned.

By knowing,
by seeing sounds as impermanent
speculation about the self is abandoned.

By knowing,
by seeing the ear-consciousness as impermanent
speculation about the self is abandoned.

By knowing,
by seeing the ear-contact as impermanent
speculation about the self is abandoned.

By knowing,
by seeing the ear-consciousness as impermanent
speculation about the self is abandoned.

By knowing,
by seeing the weal or woe or neutral state experienced
that arises owing to ear-contact as impermanent
speculation about the self is abandoned.

By knowing,
by seeing the nose as impermanent, brother
speculation about the self is abandoned.

By knowing,
by seeing scents as impermanent
speculation about the self is abandoned.

By knowing,
by seeing the nose-consciousness as impermanent
speculation about the self is abandoned.

by seeing tangibles as impermanent
speculation about the self is abandoned.

By knowing,
by seeing the body-consciousness as impermanent
speculation about the self is abandoned.

By knowing,
by seeing the body-contact as impermanent
speculation about the self is abandoned.

By knowing,
by seeing the body-consciousness as impermanent
speculation about the self is abandoned.

By knowing,
by seeing the weal or woe or neutral state experienced
that arises owing to body-contact as impermanent
speculation about the self is abandoned.

By knowing,
by seeing the mind as impermanent, brother
speculation about the self is abandoned.
