Sutta 173

Atītena Suttaṃ (1-3)

By Way of the Past (i-iii)
(Impermanence — Internal)

[173.1] Thus have I heard:

The Exalted One was once staying near Sāvatthī.

Then the Exalted One addressed the brethren, saying:

"Brethren."

"Lord," responded those brethren to the Exalted One.

The Exalted One thus spake:

§ I
Past

The eye, brethren, is impermanent, of the past.

The ear, brethren, is impermanent, of the past.

The nose, brethren, is impermanent, of the past.

The tongue, brethren, is impermanent, of the past.

The body, brethren, is impermanent, of the past.

The mind, brethren, is impermanent, of the past.

So seeing, brethren, the well-taught Ariyan disciple
is repelled by the eye,
is repelled by objects,
is repelled by eye-consciousness,
is repelled by eye-contact,
is repelled by that weal or woe or neutral state experienced,
which arises owing to eye-contact.

So seeing, brethren, the well-taught Ariyan disciple
is repelled by the ear,
is repelled by sounds,
is repelled by ear-consciousness,
is repelled by ear-contact,
is repelled by that weal or woe or neutral state experienced,
which arises owing to ear-contact.

So seeing, brethren, the well-taught Ariyan disciple

is repelled by mind-consciousness,
is repelled by mind-contact,
is repelled by that weal or woe or neutral state experienced,
which arises owing to mind-contact.

Being repelled by these,
he lusts not for them.

Not lusting he is set free.

In this freedom
comes insight
that it is a being free.

Thus he realizes:

'Rebirth is destroyed,
lived is the righteous life,
done is the task.

For life in these conditions
there is no hereafter.'"

§ II
Future

The eye, brethren, is impermanent, not yet come.[1]

Sutta 175

Atītena Suttaṃ (7-9)

By Way of the Past (vii-ix)
(Without the Self — Internal)

[175.1] Thus have I heard:

The Exalted One was once staying near Sāvatthī.

Then the Exalted One addressed the brethren, saying:

"Brethren."

"Lord," responded those brethren to the Exalted One.

The Exalted One thus spake:

§ I
Past

The eye, brethren, is without the self, of the past.

The ear, brethren, is without the self, of the past.

The nose, brethren, is without the self, of the past.

The tongue, brethren, is without the self, of the past.

The body, brethren, is without the self, of the past.

The mind, brethren, is without the self, of the past.

So seeing, brethren, the well-taught Ariyan disciple
is repelled by the eye,
is repelled by objects,
is repelled by eye-consciousness,
is repelled by eye-contact,
is repelled by that weal or woe or neutral state experienced,
which arises owing to eye-contact.

So seeing, brethren, the well-taught Ariyan disciple

is repelled by the body,

which arises owing to body-contact.

So seeing, brethren, the well-taught Ariyan disciple
is repelled by the mind,
is repelled by mind-states,
is repelled by mind-consciousness,
is repelled by mind-contact,
is repelled by that weal or woe or neutral state experienced,
which arises owing to mind-contact.

Being repelled by these,
he lusts not for them.

Not lusting he is set free.

In this freedom
comes insight
that it is a being free.

Thus he realizes:

'Rebirth is destroyed,
lived is the righteous life,
done is the task.

For life in these conditions
there is no hereafter.'"

§ II
Future

The eye, brethren, is without the self, not yet come.

The ear, brethren, is without the self, not yet come.

The nose, brethren, is without the self, not yet come.

Past

The eye, brethren, is impermanent, of the past.

What is impermanent, that is Ill.

What is Ill, that is without the self.

Of what is without the self (one can say):

'That is not mine.

That am I not.

That is not my self.'

So should it be viewed,
as it really is,
by right understanding.

The ear, brethren, is impermanent, of the past.

What is impermanent, that is Ill.

What is Ill, that is without the self.

Of what is without the self (one can say):

'That is not mine.

That am I not.

So should it be viewed,

So seeing, brethren, the well-taught Ariyan disciple
is repelled by the eye,
is repelled by objects,
is repelled by eye-consciousness,
is repelled by eye-contact,
is repelled by that weal or woe or neutral state experienced,
which arises owing to eye-contact.

Then the Exalted One addressed the brethren, saying:

"Brethren."

"Lord," responded those brethren to the Exalted One.

The Exalted One thus spake:

§ I
Past

Objects, brethren, are without the self, of the past.

Of what is without the self (one can say):

'That is not mine.

That am I not.

That is not my self.'

So should it be viewed,
as it really is,
by right understanding.

Sounds, brethren, are without the self, of the past.

lived is the righteous life,
