Precepts

Translated from the Pali
by Sister Upalavanna

[5][pts][olds][bodh] Bhikkhus whoever bhikkhu or bhikkhuni was to give up the holy life
and return to sensual pleasures
would here and now
be blamed in five ways.

What five?

Lacking in faith,
shame,
remorse,
effort and
wisdom in meritorious things.

§

Bhikkhus whoever bhikkhu or bhikkhuni was to lead the holy life
complete and pure
with unpleasantness and displeasure
with tearful eyes
would be here and now
rightfully praised in five ways.

What five?

For the presence of faith,
shame,
remorse,
effort and
wisdom in meritorious things.
