[Pāḷi English Dictionary]
It is understood that this tool is not of much use as it stands. It is being placed on the site with the idea that it is a work likely to take as much as two to three years to complete. There is every likelihood that it will not be completed by me (dukkha happens). So in order for the material that is completed to be available to future generations while not imposing the stress of a deadline to complete it on myself, it is being put up in its most advanced state and will be updated frequently, but is not being presented as a finished or even very useful work. The source images for the four Nikāyas are located here (the images for DN 1 have been read but only partially proofed. They are incorporated below (commented out).) The order of inclusion is: DB (I, II, III) (1,2,3), MS (I, II, III) (1,2,3), KS (1,2,3), GS (1,2,3); 1. proofing (A (2), B, C)(B (2); 2. links to the Sutta Index; 3. links to the PTS pages. Or maybe not.
—p.p.
This is a simple book-style search tool which can be used to find suttas dealing with a large variety of subjects relating to the Buddha's teaching. It is based on the PTS sutta translation indexes and points to the Sutta Index of this site for most translations, and to the page(s) where the subject can be found for the PTS translations. In both cases the reader is expected to have to do a little reading to find the exact thing he seeks.
A book-style index was decided upon over that of a computer-style search tool (e.g., Google) as a consequence of the observation that most people cannot find what they are looking for unless they know the exact wording which will bring them there. Here the user is expected to browse the content of the index to find wording likely to bring him to what he seeks.
