The Book of the Gradual Sayings
The Book of the Sixes
Chapter III: Above All
Translated from the Pali by E.M. Hare.
Once the Exalted One was dwelling near Sāvatthī,
at Jeta Grove,
in Anāthapiṇḍika's Park.
There the Exalted One addressed the monks, saying:
"Yes, lord," they replied, and the Exalted One said:
"Monks, with six things endowed,
a monk may cleave the mountain-king, Himalaya,
but who shall say it of rude ignorance?
Herein, monks, a monk is skilled in the attainment of concentration,
skilled in maintaining concentration,
skilled in emerging from concentration,
skilled in the weal of concentration,
skilled in the range of concentration,
skilled in the resolve for concentration.
Verily, monks, with these six things endowed,
a monk pay cleave the mountain-king Himalaya,
but who shall say it of rude ignorance?'
