[147]

[1] Thus have I heard:

Once the venerable Sāriputta
and the venerable Mahā-Koṭṭhita
were staying at Benares,
in Isipatana,
in the Deer-Park.

Then the venerable Mahā-Koṭṭhita,
rising at eventide from his solitude,
came to the venerable Sāriputta
and saluting him
sat down at one side.

So seated
he thus addressed the venerable Sāriputta:

"'Wisdom, wisdom!' is the saying, friend Sāriputta.

Pray, friend Sāriputta what is wisdom,
and to what extent has one wisdom?"

"Herein, friend Koṭṭhita, the well-taught Ariyan disciple knows as it really is that:

'The nature of body is to come to pass!

The nature of body is to come to pass!'

Knows as it really is that:

'The nature of body is to pass away!

The nature of body is to pass away!'

Knows as it really is that:

'The nature of body is to come to pass and pass away!

The nature of body is to come to pass and pass away!'

Knows as it really is that:

'The nature of feeling is to come to pass!

The nature of feeling is to come to pass!'

Knows as it really is that:

'The nature of feeling is to pass away!

The nature of feeling is to pass away!'

Knows as it really is that:

'The nature of feeling is to come to pass and pass away!

The nature of feeling is to come to pass and pass away!'

Knows as it really is that:

'The nature of perception is to come to pass!

The nature of perception is to come to pass!'

Knows as it really is that:

'The nature of perception is to pass away!

The nature of perception is to pass away!'

Knows as it really is that:

'The nature of perception is to come to pass and pass away!

The nature of perception is to come to pass and pass away!'

Knows as it really is that:

'The nature of the activities is to come to pass!

The nature of the activities is to come to pass!'

Knows as it really is that:

'The nature of the activities is to pass away!

The nature of the activities is to pass away!'

Knows as it really is that:

'The nature of the activities is to come to pass and pass away!

The nature of the activities is to come to pass and pass away!'

Knows as it really is that:

'The nature of consciousness is to come to pass!

The nature of consciousness is to come to pass!'

Knows as it really is that:

'The nature of consciousness is to pass away!

The nature of consciousness is to pass away!'

Knows as it really is that:

'The nature of consciousness is to come to pass and pass away!

The nature of consciousness is to come to pass and pass away!'

This, friend Koṭṭhita, is called wisdom,
and thus far has one wisdom."
