[1][bodh] THUS have I heard:

Then the Exalted One addressed the monks,
saying:

"Monks."

"Yes, lord," replied those monks to the Exalted One.

The Exalted One said:

"In one who gives unsystematic attention, monks,
sensual desire which has not yet arisen,
arises;
and, when arisen,
sensual desire conduces to the still more-becoming
and growth thereof.

Likewise, monks, in one who gives unsystematic attention,
malevolence which has not yet arisen,
arises;
and, when arisen,
malevolence conduces to the still more-becoming
and growth thereof.

Likewise, monks, in one who gives unsystematic attention,
sloth and torpor,
arises;
and, when arisen,
sloth and torpor conduces to the still more-becoming
and growth thereof.

Likewise, monks, in one who gives unsystematic attention,
excitement and flurry,
arises;
and, when arisen,
excitement and flurry conduces to the still more-becoming
and growth thereof.

Likewise, monks, in one who gives unsystematic attention,
doubt and wavering,
arises;
and, when arisen,
doubt and wavering conduces to the still more-becoming
and growth thereof.

Likewise, monks, in one who gives unsystematic attention,
the limb of wisdom that is mindfulness,
not having arisen;
does not arise,
and, if it has already arisen,
the limb of wisdom that is mindfulness fades away.

Likewise, monks, in one who gives unsystematic attention,
the limb of wisdom that is Norm investigation,
not having arisen;
does not arise,
and, if it has already arisen,
the limb of wisdom that is Norm investigation fades away.

Likewise, monks, in one who gives unsystematic attention,
the limb of wisdom that is energy,
not having arisen;
does not arise,
and, if it has already arisen,
the limb of wisdom that is energy fades away.

Likewise, monks, in one who gives unsystematic attention,
the limb of wisdom that is zest,
not having arisen;
does not arise,
and, if it has already arisen,
the limb of wisdom that is zest fades away.

Likewise, monks, in one who gives unsystematic attention,
the limb of wisdom that is tranquility,
not having arisen;
does not arise,
and, if it has already arisen,
the limb of wisdom that is tranquility fades away.

Likewise, monks, in one who gives unsystematic attention,
the limb of wisdom that is concentration,
not having arisen;
does not arise,
and, if it has already arisen,
the limb of wisdom that is concentration fades away.

Likewise, monks, in one who gives unsystematic attention,
the limb of wisdom that is equinimity,
not having arisen;
does not arise,
and, if it has already arisen,
the limb of wisdom that is equinimity fades away.

"But monks, in one who gives systematic attention,
sensual desire which has not yet arisen,
does not arise;
and, if it has arisen,
it is abandoned.

Likewise, monks, in one who gives systematic attention,
malevolence which has not yet arisen,
does not arise;
and, if it has arisen,
it is abandoned.

Likewise, monks, in one who gives systematic attention,
sloth and torpor,
does not arise;
and, if it has arisen,
it is abandoned.

Likewise, monks, in one who gives systematic attention,
excitement and flurry,
does not arise;
and, if it has arisen,
it is abandoned.

Likewise, monks, in one who gives systematic attention,
doubt and wavering,
does not arise;
and, if it has arisen,
it is abandoned.

Likewise, monks, in one who gives systematic attention,
the limb of wisdom that is mindfulness,
not having yet arisen;
does arise,
and, if it has already arisen,
by cultivation,
the limb of wisdom that is mindfulness goes to fulfilment.

Likewise, monks, in one who gives systematic attention,
the limb of wisdom that is Norm investigation,
not having yet arisen;
does arise,
and, if it has already arisen,
by cultivation,
the limb of wisdom that is Norm investigation goes to fulfilment.

Likewise, monks, in one who gives systematic attention,
the limb of wisdom that is energy,
not having yet arisen;
does arise,
and, if it has already arisen,
by cultivation,
the limb of wisdom that is energy goes to fulfilment.

Likewise, monks, in one who gives systematic attention,
the limb of wisdom that is zest,
not having yet arisen;
does arise,
and, if it has already arisen,
by cultivation,
the limb of wisdom that is zest goes to fulfilment.

Likewise, monks, in one who gives systematic attention,
the limb of wisdom that is tranquility,
not having yet arisen;
does arise,
and, if it has already arisen,
by cultivation,
the limb of wisdom that is tranquility goes to fulfilment.

Likewise, monks, in one who gives systematic attention,
the limb of wisdom that is concentration,
not having yet arisen;
does arise,
and, if it has already arisen,
by cultivation,
the limb of wisdom that is concentration goes to fulfilment.

Likewise, monks, in one who gives systematic attention,
the limb of wisdom that is equinimity,
not having yet arisen;
does arise,
and, if it has already arisen,
by cultivation,
the limb of wisdom that is equinimity goes to fulfilment."
