[171]

[1][olds][than] THUS have I heard:

Once the Exalted One was staying near Sāvatthī.

Then the Exalted One addressed the monks,
saying:

"Monks."

"Yes, lord," replied those monks to the Exalted One.

The Exalted One said:

"Monks, there are these five controlling powers.

What five?

The controlling power of faith,
the controlling power of energy,
the controlling power of mindfulness,
the controlling power of concentration,
the controlling power of insight.

§

But from what point of view,[1] monks,
should the controlling power of faith be regarded?

From that of the four limbs of stream-wrinning.[2]

The controlling power of faith should thus be regarded.[ed1]

And from what point of view, monks,
should the controlling power of energy[3] be regarded?

From that of the four supreme efforts.[4]

The controlling power of energy should thus be regarded.

And from what point of view, monks,
should the controlling [172] power of mindfulness[5] be regarded?

From that of the four stations of mindfulness.

The controlling power of mindfulness should thus be regarded.

And from what point of view, monks,
should the controlling power of concentration[6] be regarded?

From that of the four trances.

The controlling power of concentration should thus be regarded.

And from what point of view, monks,
should the controlling power of insight[7] be regarded?

It should be regarded from the point of view
of the four Ariyan truths.

The controlling power of insight should thus be regarded.

These, monks, are the five controlling powers."
