[1] THUS have I heard:

Once the Exalted One was staying near Sāvatthī.

Then the Exalted One addressed the monks,
saying:

"Monks."

"Yes, lord," replied those monks to the Exalted One.

The Exalted One said:

"Monks, whatsoever recluses or brahmins
understand not the sense-faculty of the eye,
understand not the arising of the sense-faculty of the eye,
understand not the perishing of the sense-faculty of the eye,
understand not the practice leading to the ceasing of the sense-faculty of the eye;

understand not the sense-faculty of the ear,
understand not the arising of the sense-faculty of the ear,
understand not the perishing of the sense-faculty of the ear,
understand not the practice leading to the ceasing of the sense-faculty of the ear;

understand not the sense-faculty of the nose,
understand not the arising of the sense-faculty of the nose,
understand not the perishing of the sense-faculty of the nose,
understand not the practice leading to the ceasing of the sense-faculty of the nose;

understand not the sense-faculty of the tongue,
understand not the arising of the sense-faculty of the tongue,
understand not the perishing of the sense-faculty of the tongue,
understand not the practice leading to the ceasing of the sense-faculty of the tongue;

understand not the sense-faculty of the body,
understand not the arising of the sense-faculty of the body,
understand not the perishing of the sense-faculty of the body,
understand not the practice leading to the ceasing of the sense-faculty of the body;

understand not the sense-faculty of the mind,
understand not the arising of the sense-faculty of the mind,
understand not the perishing of the sense-faculty of the mind,
understand not the practice leading to the ceasing of the sense-faculty of the mind;

such are not worthy to be accounted
as recluses among recluses
nor as brahmins among brahmins,
nor have those worthies of themselves understood,
or even in this life realized,
the goal of recluseship
or of brahminhood,
nor do they dwell in the attainment of it.

But, monks, those recluses and brahmins
who understand the sense-faculty of the eye,
understand the arising of the sense-faculty of the eye,
understand the perishing of the sense-faculty of the eye,
understand the practice leading to the ceasing of the sense-faculty of the eye;

understand the sense-faculty of the ear,
understand the arising of the sense-faculty of the ear,
understand the perishing of the sense-faculty of the ear,
understand the practice leading to the ceasing of the sense-faculty of the ear;

understand the sense-faculty of the nose,
understand the arising of the sense-faculty of the nose,
understand the perishing of the sense-faculty of the nose,
understand the practice leading to the ceasing of the sense-faculty of the nose;

understand the sense-faculty of the tongue,
understand the arising of the sense-faculty of the tongue,
understand the perishing of the sense-faculty of the tongue,
understand the practice leading to the ceasing of the sense-faculty of the tongue;

understand the sense-faculty of the body,
understand the arising of the sense-faculty of the body,
understand the perishing of the sense-faculty of the body,
understand the practice leading to the ceasing of the sense-faculty of the body;

understand the sense-faculty of the mind,
understand the arising of the sense-faculty of the mind,
understand the perishing of the sense-faculty of the mind,
understand the practice leading to the ceasing of the sense-faculty of the mind;

such are worthy to be accounted
as recluses among recluses
and as brahmins among brahmins,
and those worthies have of themselves understood,
even in this life realized,
the goal of recluseship
and brahminhood,
and they do dwell in the attainment of it."
