Once the Exalted One was dwelling near Sāvatthī,
at Jeta Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's Park;
and there he addressed the monks, saying:
"Monks."
'Yes, lord,' they replied;
and the Exalted One said:
"Monks, there are these seven fires.[1]
What seven?
The fires of passion,
hatred,
delusion,
the fires of the venerable,
the householder,
the gift-worthy,
the wood-fire.
Verily, monks, these are the seven fires.'
Childers. Aggi. Eleven (enumerated in Saṇkhyārtha Prakāça): rāgo — lust, doso — hate, moho — error, jāti — birth, jarā — decay, maraṇaṃ — death, soko — sorrow, paridevo — lamentation, dukkhaṃ — pain, domanassaṃ — grief, upāyāso — despair.
