The Exalted One was once staying near Sāvatthī, at Jeta Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's Park.
Then the Exalted One addressed the brethren, saying:
"Brethren."
"Lord," responded those brethren to the Exalted One.
The Exalted One said:
"I will show you a teaching, Brethren,
for the abandoning the all
by fully knowing,
by comprehending it.
Do ye listen to it.
And what, Brethren, is the teaching
for the abandoning of the all
by fully knowing,
by comprehending it?
The eye, Brethren, must be abandoned
by fully knowing,
by comprehending it.
Objects, must be abandoned
by fully knowing,
by comprehending them.
Eye-consciousness, must be abandoned
by fully knowing,
by comprehending it.
Eye-contact, must be abandoned
by fully knowing,
by comprehending it.
"That weal or woe or neutral state experienced,
which arises owing to eye-contact -
that also must be abandoned
by fully knowing,
by comprehending it.

The ear, Brethren, must be abandoned
by fully knowing,
by comprehending it.
Sounds, must be abandoned
by fully knowing,
by comprehending them.
Ear-consciousness, must be abandoned
by fully knowing,
by comprehending it.
Ear-contact, must be abandoned
by fully knowing,
by comprehending it.
"That weal or woe or neutral state experienced,
which arises owing to ear-contact -
that also must be abandoned
by fully knowing,||
by comprehending it.

The nose, Brethren, must be abandoned
by fully knowing,
by comprehending it.
Scents, must be abandoned
by fully knowing,
by comprehending them.
Nose-consciousness, must be abandoned
by fully knowing,
by comprehending it.
Nose-contact, must be abandoned
by fully knowing,
by comprehending it.
"That weal or woe or neutral state experienced,
which arises owing to nose-contact -
that also must be abandoned
by fully knowing,
by comprehending it.

The tongue, Brethren, must be abandoned
by fully knowing,
by comprehending it.
Savours, must be abandoned
by fully knowing,
by comprehending them.
Tongue-consciousness, must be abandoned
by fully knowing,
by comprehending it.
Tongue-contact, must be abandoned
by fully knowing,
by comprehending it.
"That weal or woe or neutral state experienced,
which arises owing to tongue-contact -
that also must be abandoned
by fully knowing,
by comprehending it.

The body, Brethren, must be abandoned
by fully knowing,
by comprehending it.
Things tangible, must be abandoned
by fully knowing,
by comprehending them.
Body-consciousness, must be abandoned
by fully knowing,
by comprehending it.
Body-contact, must be abandoned
by fully knowing,
by comprehending it.
"That weal or woe or neutral state experienced,
which arises owing to body-contact -
that also must be abandoned
by fully knowing,
by comprehending it.

The mind, Brethren, must be abandoned
by fully knowing,
by comprehending it.
Mind-states, must be abandoned
by fully knowing,
by comprehending them.
Mind-consciousness, must be abandoned
by fully knowing,
by comprehending it.
Mind-contact, must be abandoned
by fully knowing,
by comprehending it.
"That weal or woe or neutral state experienced,
which arises owing to mind-contact -
that also must be abandoned
by fully knowing,
by comprehending it.
That, brethren, is the teaching
for the abandoning the all
by fully knowing,
by comprehending it."
