The Art of Cultivating One State of Consciousness
By
Abandoning Another
So then on this day,
after waking up, getting up, attending to bowl and robes, leaving your hut, going to town, going on your beggars rounds, eating, chewing, tasting and swallowing, leaving town, urinating and defecating,
And then separating yourself from the grosser sorts of involvements, such as:
Wanting and wishing for pleasure
Anger at disagreeable situations
Indulging in lazy ways and being downbound by inertia
Indulging in fear and terror
Indulging in doubts and uncertainties
Not bringing the attention to giving,
not bringing the attention to ethical culture
not bringing the attention to self-control
not bringing the attention to high working hypothesis
not bringing the attention to high principles
not bringing the attention to high talk
not bringing the attention to high works
not bringing the attention to high lifestyles
not bringing the attention to high making effort
not bringing the attention to the body
not bringing the attention to sensation
not bringing the attention to mental states
having previously fully developed high mind,
And having set up guard over the senses,
And having set up a balance between being over excited and being too lax by using The Seven Dimensions of Self Awakening,
And then separating yourself from your more disturbing surroundings by finding a place to be alone:
deep, deep, deep in some forest pasture,
at the root of soma tree,
on the side of a mountain,
in the wilderness,
in a cave,
in a cemetery,
out in the middle of an open field,
on a heap of grass and leaves,
or in some empty hut.
And then, sitting down, upright, legs bent-across-lapwise,
and bringing the mind to the area around the mouth
and taking in
1,
2,
3,
one, two, three,
deep, deep, deep
satisfying inniinhalationsa soma fresh air,
Let It All Go
Let It Go
And then, from there
in just that way
minding the in-breath
minding the out-breath
making whole hearted single-minded detachment your intent,
and
Not becoming involved in
Wanting and wishing for pleasure
Anger at disagreeable situations
Indulging in lazy ways and being downbound by inertia
Indulging in fear and terror
Indulging in doubts and uncertainties
stilling,
calming,
tranquillizing the body
and concentrating the mind,
And then, pervading the entire universe with friendly vibrations,
Sympathetic Vibrations,
Happiness at the Happiness's of Others, and
Objective Detachment.
And then separated from things of the senses,
separated from gross involvements;
with the interest, enjoyment, and sense of ease
that come with solitude,
while still rethinking and pondering,
enter into and make a habitat of The First Burning.
Soak,
Permeate,
Suffuse,
and
Saturate
That heap of pain there
You call: "My Body"
with the interest, enjoyment, and sense of ease
that come with solitude.
In the same way
As the Bath Attendant of Old,
Or his skillful Apprentice,
Whenever he wishes to make a soap-ball
Takes a copper pot
Adds his soap flake
And sprinkles it with a little moisture
And then he rolls that soap-ball
round and round and round and round
till it's
Soaked,
Permeated,
Suffused,
and
Saturated
with
but does not ooze any
moisture!
In the Same way,
separated from things of the senses,
separated from gross involvements;
with the interest, enjoyment, and sense of ease
that come with solitude,
while still rethinking and rambling on,
enter into and make a habitat of The First Burning.
And
Soak,
Permeate,
Suffuse,
and
Saturate
That body there
with the interest, enjoyment, and sense of ease
that come with solitude.
§
And then separated from rethinking and pondering,
with impassivity and having become whole-heartedly single-minded,
not bringing the attention to rethinking and pondering,
bringing the attention to the interest, enjoyment, and sense of ease
that come with serenity,
enter into and make a habitat of The Second Burning.
Soak,
Permeate,
Suffuse,
and
Saturate
That body there
with the interest, enjoyment, and sense of ease
that come with serenity.
In the same way
As a spring-fed pond
With no in-let from the East
With no in-let from the South
With no in-let from the West
With no in-let from the North
And no rain com'n down from the gods above
is nevertheless
soaked,
permeated,
suffused,
and
saturated
with the moisture arising
from the spring
which feeds it from below
In the same way
separated from rethinking and pondering,
with impassivity and having become whole-heartedly single-minded,
not bringing the attention to rethinking and pondering,
bringing the attention to the interest, enjoyment, and sense of ease
that come with serenity,
enter into and make a habitat of The Second Burning.
And
Soak,
Permeate,
Suffuse,
and
Saturate
That body there
with the interest, enjoyment, and sense of ease
that come with getting high
§
And then separated from interest and enjoyment,
not bringing the attention to interest and enjoyment,
with impassivity, detachment, and clear consciousness
bringing the attention to the pleasure
that comes with that sense of ease
the Aristocrats describe as:
'Detached, satisfied with serenity, he's got the life!'
enter into and make a habitat of The Third Burning.
And
Soak,
Permeate
Suffuse,
and
Saturate
That Cracked Pot there
with the pleasure
that comes with a sense of ease
In the same way
as in a water-lilly pond
filled with white water lilies
filled with blue water lilies
filled with red water lilies
some white water lilies
some blue water lilies
some red water lilies
are born in the water
grow up in the water
reach maturity in the water, and
without rising above the water
come to flower below the surface of the water, and are
soaked,
permeated,
suffused,
and
saturated
from the tops of the tips of their flowering heads above
to the bottoms of their roots below
with that water
In the same way,
separated from interest and enjoyment,
not bringing the attention to interest and enjoyment,
with impassivity, detachment, and clear consciousness
bringing the attention to the pleasure
that comes with that sense of ease
the Aristocrats describe as:
'Detached, satisfied with serenity, he's got the life!'
enter into and make a habitat of The Third Burning.
And
Soak,
Permeate
Suffuse,
and
Saturate
That body there
with the pleasure
that comes with a sense of ease.
§
And then separated from pain
letting go of pleasure
not bringing the attention to pain and pleasure
letting go of any predisposition to return to
bodily pains and pleasures
without pain
without pleasure
clearly conscious, detached,
satisfied with the
bright
shiny
clean-clear-through
radiance
of
detachment
enter into and make a habitat of The Fourth Burning.
And
Soak
Permeate
Suffuse
and
Saturate
that body
with the bright, shiny, clean-clear-through
radiance of detachment
In the same way
as it comes to pass that the body gets wrapt
from the tops of the tips of the hairs of the head above
to the bottoms of the soles of the feet below
in a bright, shiny, clean-clear-through radiant white cloth
so that there is no part of that body
that is not covered
by that bright, shiny, clean-clear-through radiant white cloth,
In the same way
separated from pain
letting go of pleasure
not bringing the attention to pain and pleasure
letting go of any predisposition to return to
bodily pains and pleasures
without pain
without pleasure
clearly conscious, detached,
satisfied with the
bright
shiny
clean-clear-through
radiance
of
detachment
enter into and make a habitat of The Fourth Burning.
And
Soak
Permeate
Suffuse
and
Saturate
that body
with the bright, shiny, clean-clear-through
radiance of detachment
§
The situation does not exist
that when delighting in worldly activity,
encountering some pleasant state of freedom of mind,
it can be maintained and made a habitat.
But the situation exists,
and it can be expected that
not delighting in worldly activity,
encountering some pleasant state of freedom of mind
or some state beyond time and unshakable,
it can be maintained and made a habitat.
I do not behold one material shape
wherein is delight, wherein is contentment,
but that from its changing and becoming otherwise
there will not arise grief, sorrow, suffering,
lamentation and despair.
Consequently, in this case,
this is the way of living
for one who takes no delight in worldly activity,
that is to say:
by not attending to any signs,
the entering on and abiding in
an inward emptiness, signlessness, ambitionlessness.
And if, while living in this manner there are monks, nuns, men and women lay followers, kings and kings' ministers, leaders and disciples of other sects who approach, then, with the whole mind tending to impassivity, inclining to solitude, taking pleasure in letting go and ending all the things which give rise to the no-goods, speak at that time only of matters relating to letting go.
§
If one desires:
'Entering on emptiness, signlessness, ambitionlessness,
with regard to the internal,
may I make a habit of that,'
one should steady, calm, and concentrate the mind
precisely on what is inward.
Then, if, while attending to emptiness, signlessness, ambitionlessness,
with regard to the internal
the mind is not satisfied with,
not pleased with,
not set on,
not freed in that emptiness, signlessness, ambitionlessness
with regard to the internal,
make the situation conscious:
'While I was attending to emptiness, signlessness, ambitionlessness
with regard to the internal,
my mind was not satisfied with,
not pleased with,
not set on,
not freed by my attending to emptiness, signlessness, ambitionlessness
with regard to the internal.'
And then renew the effort
to steady, calm, and concentrate the mind
precisely on what is internal.
If one desires:
'Entering on emptiness, signlessness, ambitionlessness,
with regard to the external,
may I make a habit of that,'
one should steady, calm, and concentrate the mind
precisely on what is external.
Then, if, while attending to emptiness, signlessness, ambitionlessness,
with regard to the external
the mind is not satisfied with,
not pleased with,
not set on,
not freed in that emptiness, signlessness, ambitionlessness
with regard to the external,
make the situation conscious:
'While I was attending to emptiness, signlessness, ambitionlessness
with regard to the external,
my mind was not satisfied with,
not pleased with,
not set on,
not freed by my attending to emptiness, signlessness, ambitionlessness
with regard to the external.'
And then renew the effort
to steady, calm, and concentrate the mind
precisely on what is external.
If one desires:
'Entering on emptiness, signlessness, ambitionlessness,
with regard to what is both internal and external,
may I make a habit of that,'
one should steady, calm, and concentrate the mind
precisely on what is both internal and external.
Then, if, while attending to emptiness, signlessness, ambitionlessness,
with regard to what is both the internal and external
the mind is not satisfied with,
not pleased with,
not set on,
not freed in that emptiness, signlessness, ambitionlessness
with regard to what is both internal and external,
make the situation conscious:
'While I was attending to emptiness, signlessness, ambitionlessness
with regard to what is both internal and external,
my mind was not satisfied with,
not pleased with,
not set on,
not freed by my attending to emptiness, signlessness, ambitionlessness
with regard to what is both internal and external.'
And then renew the effort to steady, calm, and concentrate the mind
precisely on what is both internal and external.
If one desires:
'Entering on emptiness, signlessness, ambitionlessness,
with regard to what is unshakable,
may I make a habit of that,'
one should steady, calm, and concentrate the mind
precisely on what is unshakable.
Then, if, while attending to emptiness, signlessness, ambitionlessness,
with regard to what is unshakable
the mind is not satisfied with,
not pleased with,
not set on,
not freed in that emptiness, signlessness, ambitionlessness
with regard to the unshakable,
make the situation conscious:
'While I was attending to emptiness, signlessness, ambitionlessness with regard to the unshakable, my mind was not satisfied with, not pleased with, not set on, not freed by my attending to emptiness, signlessness, ambitionlessness with regard to the unshakable.'
And then renew the effort to steady, calm, and concentrate the mind precisely on the unshakable.
Then, after a time, but sooner or later,
while attending to emptiness, signlessness, ambitionlessness
with regard to the internal
the mind finds satisfaction with,
is pleased with,
set on and freed by emptiness, signlessness, ambitionlessness,
with regard to the internal and he sees:
'While I was attending to emptiness, signlessness, ambitionlessness
with regard to the internal
my mind was satisfied with,
pleased with,
set on and freed by emptiness, signlessness, ambitionlessness
with regard to the internal.'
While attending to emptiness, signlessness, ambitionlessness
with regard to the external
the mind finds satisfaction with,
is pleased with,
set on and freed by emptiness, signlessness, ambitionlessness,
with regard to the external and he sees:
'While I was attending to emptiness, signlessness, ambitionlessness
with regard to the external
my mind was satisfied with,
pleased with,
set on and freed by emptiness, signlessness, ambitionlessness
with regard to the external.'
While attending to emptiness, signlessness, ambitionlessness
with regard to what is both internal and external
the mind finds satisfaction with,
is pleased with,
set on and freed by emptiness, signlessness, ambitionlessness,
with regard to what is both internal and external and he sees:
'While I was attending to emptiness, signlessness, ambitionlessness
with regard to what is both internal and external
my mind was satisfied with,
pleased with,
set on and freed by emptiness, signlessness, ambitionlessness
with regard to both the internal and external.'
While attending to emptiness, signlessness, ambitionlessness
with regard to the unshakable
the mind finds satisfaction with,
is pleased with,
set on and freed by emptiness, signlessness, ambitionlessness,
with regard to unshakable and he sees:
'While I was attending to emptiness, signlessness, ambitionlessness
with regard to unshakable
my mind was satisfied with,
pleased with,
set on and freed by emptiness, signlessness, ambitionlessness
with regard to unshakable.'
§
In the same way as one's place to be alone
is empty of the disturbances of worldly life:
empty of elephants, cows, horses asses;
empty of dealings with gold and silver;
empty of groups of men and women,
and there is only this that remains to disturb the emptiness:
that is, the vibration emanating off the place to be alone;
in the same way,
paying no attention to the disturbances of the world,
paying no attention to human beings,
bring the attention to the vibration emanating off the place to be alone.
Take to paying attention only to perception
of the place to be alone,
and clean out, tidy up and liberate the mind.
And, making yourself conscious of the matter
see it this way:
"This way there is no disturbance emanating from perception of the city.
This way there is no disturbance emanating from perception of human beings.
This way there is only that disturbance which emanates off perception of the place to be alone."
In this way regard that which is present
as empty of that which is not present;
and, with regard to what remains,
understand that:
'That being; this is.'
Thus there is in the case of this case,
a sitting-down-to-empty-out
that results in surpassing purity.
And again, deeper than that,
paying no attention to human beings,
paying no attention to the place to be alone,
bring the attention to the vibration emanating off perception of earth.
Take to paying attention only to perception of earth,
and clean out, tidy up and liberate the mind.
In the same way as one would regard a bull's hide,
stretched out to cure,
held down by a hundred pegs,
it's life done gone;
when paying attention to earth,
do not think about anything on earth
such as dry land or rivers or swamps
or marshes with plants with branches and thorns
or mountains or plains,
but only just pay attention to the vibration
which emanates off perception of earth.
Take to paying attention only to perception of earth,
and clean out, tidy up and liberate the mind.
And, making yourself conscious of the matter
see it this way:
"This way there is no disturbance emanating from perception of human beings.
This way there is no disturbance emanating from perception of the place to be alone.
This way there is only that disturbance which emanates off perception of earth."

And again, deeper than that,
paying no attention to the place to be alone,
paying no attention to earth,
bring the attention to the vibration emanating off The Sphere of Space.
Take to paying attention only to perception of The Sphere of Space,
and clean out, tidy up and liberate the mind.
And, making yourself conscious of the matter
see it this way:
"This way there is no disturbance emanating from perception of the place to be alone.
This way there is no disturbance emanating from perception of earth.
This way there is only this that disturbs the emptiness:
that is, the vibration which emanates off perception of the Sphere of Space."
In this way regard that which is present
as empty of that which is not present;
and, with regard to what remains,
understand that:
'That being; this is.'

a sitting-down-to-empty-out
that results in surpassing purity.
And again, deeper than that,
paying no attention to earth,
paying no attention to The Sphere of Space,
bring the attention to the vibration emanating off The Sphere of Consciousness.
Take to paying attention only to perception of the Sphere of Consciousness,
and clean out, tidy up and liberate the mind.
And, making yourself conscious of the matter
see it this way:
"This way there is no disturbance emanating from perception of earth.
This way there is no disturbance emanating from perception of The Sphere of Space.

And again, deeper than that,
paying no attention to The Sphere of Space,
paying no attention to The Sphere of Consciousness,
bring the attention to the vibration emanating off The Sphere Where No Thing's There.
Take to paying attention only to perception of The Sphere Where No Thing's There,
and clean out, tidy up and liberate the mind.
And, making yourself conscious of the matter
see it this way:
"This way there is no disturbance emanating from perception of The Sphere of Space.
This way there is no disturbance emanating from the perception of The Sphere of Consciousness.

And again, deeper than that,
paying no attention to The Sphere of Consciousness,
paying no attention to The Sphere Where No Thing's There,
bring the attention to the vibration emanating off The Sphere of Neither-Perception-Nor-Non-Perception.
Take to paying attention only to perception of The Sphere of Neither-Perception-Nor-Non-Perception,
and clean out, tidy up and liberate the mind.
And, making yourself conscious of the matter
see it this way:
"This way there is no disturbance emanating from perception of The Sphere of Consciousness. This way there is no disturbance emanating from perception of The Sphere Where No Thing's There. This way there is only this that disturbs the emptiness: that is, the vibration which emanates off perception of the Sphere of Neither-Perception-Nor-Non-Perception."
In this way regard that which is present

that results in surpassing purity.
And again, deeper than that,
paying no attention to The Sphere Where No Thing's There,
paying no attention to The Sphere of Neither-Perception-Nor-Non-Perception,
bring the attention to the mental High-Getting that is Signless.
Take to paying attention only to the mental High-Getting that is Signless,
and clean out, tidy up and liberate the mind.
And, making yourself conscious of the matter
see it this way:
"This way there is no disturbance emanating from perception of The Sphere Where No Thing's There.
This way there is no disturbance emanating from perception of the Sphere of Neither-Perception-Nor-Non-Perception.
This way there is only this that disturbs the emptiness:
that is, the six sense-realms bound to this body reacting to life."
In this way regard that which is present
as empty of that which is not present;
and, with regard to what remains,
understand that:
'That being; this is.'
Thus there is in the case of this case,
a sitting-down-to-empty-out
that results in surpassing purity.
And, making yourself conscious of the matter
see it this way:
"This Mental High-Getting that is Signless
is something that has been constructed, thought out.
Whatever has been constructed or thought out
is subject to change and coming to an end."
Knowing and seeing this,
the heart is free from the grip of sense pleasures,
the heart is freed from the grip of living,
the mind is free from the grip of blindness.
And in freedom comes the knowledge of freedom,
and it can be seen:
"This is freedom!
Left behind is rebirth,
Lived was the best of lives,
Done is duty's doing,
No more of this side or that;
No more it'n and at'n for me!"
