Once upon a time, Old Man Sāriputta,
was living amungst the Magadhese,
in Nālagā town.
There then Roseapple-Eater, the wanderer,
went to where Old Man Sāriputta was located,
where he drew near and
having drawn near Old Man Sāriputta,
having given salutation,
took a seat to one side.
Having taken a seat to one side then,
Roseapple-Eater, the wanderer, said this
to Old Man Sāriputta:
"Who, friend Sāriputta,
are those in the world who are
Dhamma-talkers?
Who in this world have
correctly entered the path?
Who in this world have
come along well?"
"He, friend, who speaks of
letting go of lust,
who speaks of
letting go of anger
who speaks of
letting go of confusion
is here in this world
a Dhamma-talker.
He, friend, who has
entered the path for
letting go of lust
who has entered the path for
letting go of anger
who has entered the path for
letting go of confusion
is here in this world
one who has correctly
entered the path.
He friend, who has
let go of lust
has cut it off at the root,
who has has made it like
a palm-tree cut down to the ground,
a thing no longer able
to rise up again
who has let go of anger
who has has made it like
a palm-tree cut down to the ground,
a thing no longer able
to rise up again
who has let go of confusion
who has has made it like
a palm-tree cut down to the ground,
a thing no longer able
to rise up again
is here in this world
one who has come along well.
"Is there, friend, a Way,
is there a path
to personally experience
this letting go of
lust, anger and confusion?"
"There is, friend, a Way,
there is a path
to personally experience
this letting go of
lust, anger and confusion.'
"What, friend, is that Way,
what is that path
to personally experience
this letting go of
lust, anger and confusion?"
"This, friend:
The Aristocratic Multi-dimensional Way,[1]
that is:
Consummate view,
consummate principles,
consummate talk,
consummate works,
consummate lifestyle,
consummate self-control,
consummate mind,
consummate serenity.
"This is, friend, that Way,
that path
to personally experience
this letting go of
lust, anger and confusion."
"A lucky Way, friend,
a lucky path,
to personally experience,
this letting go of
lust, anger and confusion and
moreover, friend Sāriputta,
there is enough there
to bring about non-carelessness."
