[1] THUS HAVE I HEARD

Once the Exalted One was dwelling near Sāvatthī.

Then the Exalted One addressed the monks, saying:

"Monks!"

"Yes, lord," replied those monks to the Exalted One.

The Exalted One said:

"Monks, one possessed of three qualities
is put into Purgatory according to his deserts.

What three?

One is himself a speaker of bitter speech,
he encourages another in bitter speech,
he approves of bitter speech.

Possessed of these three qualities
one is put into Purgatory according to his deserts.

§

Monks, one possessed of three qualities
is put into heaven according to his deserts.

What three?

He himself abstains from bitter speech,
he encourages another to abstain from bitter speech,
he approves of abstaining from bitter speech.

Possessed of these three qualities
is put into heaven according to his deserts."
