[1][than][bodh] At Sāvatthī was the occasion (for this discourse)

Then a certain brother came to see the Exalted One,
and on coming to him
saluted him
and sat down at one side.

As he sat at one side that brother said to the Exalted One: -

"'The world! The world!'[1] is the saying, lord.

How far, lord, does this saying go?"

It crumbles away, brother.

Therefore it is called "the world."

What crumbles away?

'The eye, brother, crumbles away,
objects crumble away,
eye-consciousness crumbles away,
eye-contact crumbles away,
that weal or woe or neutral state that arises through eye-contact, brother,
that also crumbles away.

The ear, brother, crumbles away,
sounds, crumble away,||
ear-consciousness crumbles away,
ear-contact crumbles away,
that weal or woe or neutral state that arises through ear-contact,
that also crumbles away.

The nose, brother, crumbles away,
scents, crumble away,
nose-consciousness, crumbles away,
nose-contact, crumbles away,
that weal or woe or neutral state that arises through nose-contact,
that also crumbles away.

The tongue, brother, crumbles away,
savours, crumble away,
tongue-consciousness, crumbles away,
tongue-contact, crumbles away,
that weal or woe or neutral state that arises through tongue-contact,
that also crumbles away.

The body, brother, crumbles away,
tangibles, crumble away,
body-consciousness, crumbles away,
body-contact, crumbles away,
that weal or woe or neutral state that arises through body-contact,
that also crumbles away.

The mind, brother, crumbles away,
mind-states, crumble away,
mind-consciousness, crumbles away,
mind-contact, crumbles away,
that weal or woe or neutral state that arises through mind-contact,
that also crumbles away.

It crumbles away, brother.

Therefore it is called 'the world.'"
