Ñāta Suttaṃ

Knowingly

[11][pts][bodh][upal] I HEAR TELL:

Once upon a time, The Lucky man,
Sāvatthi-town revisiting,
Jeta Grove,
Anathapiṇḍika's Sporting Grounds.

There, to the beggars gathered round
he said:

"Characterized by three things, beggars,
a notorious beggar[1]
works to the disadvantage of
those who follow,
the great discomfort of
many,
the loss,
discomfort and
pain of
many generations —
gods and men.

What three?

Advising unsuitable acts of body,
advising unsuitable acts of speech,
advising unsuitable Dhamma.

These are the three things
characterized by which, beggars,
a notorious beggar
works to the disadvantage of
those who follow,
the great discomfort of
many
the loss,
discomfort and
pain of
many generations —
gods and men.

Characterized by three things, beggars,
a famous beggar
works to the advantage of
those who follow,
the great comfort of
many,
the gain,
comfort and
pleasure of
many generations —
gods and men.

What three?

Advising suitable acts of body,
advising suitable acts of speech,
advising suitable Dhamma.

These are the three things
characterized by which, beggars,
a famous beggar
works yo the advantage of
those who follow,
the great comfort of
many
the gain,
comfort and
pleasure of
many generations —
gods and men.

To Be Remembered Life-Long

[12][pts][bodh][upal] "These three, beggars,
should be remembered
life-long
by a crowned king of the ruling class.

What three?

That place, beggars, where
a crowned ruling-class king
was born.

That, beggars,
is the first
a crowned ruling-class king
should remember life-long.

And further on,
at a point later on, beggars,
the place where a ruling-class king
was crowned.

That, beggars,
is the second
a crowned ruling class king
should remember life-long.

And further on,
at a point later on, beggars,
the conquered territory
a crowned ruling-class king
was at when victorious in battle.

That, beggars,
is the third
a crowned ruling-class king
should remember life-long.

These then, beggars,
are the three,
which should be remembered
life-long
by a crowned king of the ruling class.

Even so, beggars,
these three
should be remembered
life-long
by a beggar.

What three?

bhikkhus at angor wat

That place, beggars, where
the beggar shaved off his head-hair and beard,
dressed in ochre robes and
left the house
for homelessness.

That, beggars,
is the first
a beggar
should remember life-long.

And further on,
at a point later on, beggars,
the place where a beggar
understood,
as it was really intended,
the phrase:
'This is pain;'
understood,
as it was really intended,
the phrase:
'This is the origin of pain;'
understood,
as it was really intended,
the phrase:
'This is the ending of pain;'
understood,
as it was really intended,
the phrase:
'This is the walk to walk to
the ending of pain.'

That, beggars,
is the second
a beggar
should remember life-long.

And further on,
at a point later on, beggars,
the place where a beggar
destroyed the corrupting influences, and
without corrupting influences,
heart-freed,
wisdom-freed,
in this seen thing
came to know this as an eye-witness
rising up into and
abiding therein.

That, beggars,
is the third
a beggar
should remember life-long.

These then, beggars,
are the three
that should be remembered
life-long
by a beggar."

Aspiration

[13][pts][bodh][upal] "Three, beggars, are the persons to be seen
existing in the world.

What three?

One lacking aspiration,
one aspiring,
one that has passsed beyond aspiring.

And what person, beggars,
is lacking aspiration?

Here, beggars,
a person is reborn in a low family,
a family of ruffians, or
a family of hunters, or
a family of bamboo workers, or
a family of cart makers, or
a family of garbage collectors,
impoverished,
food and drink hard to find,
hard to get a livelihood,
where just getting grub and duds
is difficult.

And he is
of unpleasant appearance,
hard to look at,
misshapen,
diseased;

he is half blind, or
crippled, or
lame, or
lopsided;

he does not gain food,
drink,
clothing,
vehicle;

he does not receive
garland,
scents,
cosmetics,
bed,
vestments,
lamp.

He hears:

'Sucha one of the ruling class,
has been consecrated
with the ruling class consecration.'

But he does not have the thought:

'When will they consecrate me
with ruling class consecration?'

This, beggars,
is what is called
a person lacking aspiration.

And what, beggars,
is an aspiring person?

Here, beggars,
the eldest son
of a crowned king of the ruling class
ambitious to be consecrated but
stagnating unconsecreated.

He hears:

'Sucha one of the ruling class,
has been consecrated
with the ruling class consecration.'

And he has the thought:

'When will they consecrate me
with ruling class consecration?'

This, beggars,
is what is called
an aspiring person.

And what, beggars,
is the person who has
passed beyond aspiring?

Here, beggars,
we have a crowned king
of the ruling class.

He hears:

'Sucha one of the ruling class,
has been consecrated
with the ruling class consecration.'

But he does not have the thought:

'When will they consecrate me
with ruling class consecration?'

Why is that?

Whatever, beggars,
was his earlier aspiration
to be consecrated
with the ruling class consecration,
has been resolved by him.

This, beggars,
is what is called
a person who has passed beyond aspiring.

These are the three persons, beggars,
to be seen existing in the world.

Even so, beggars,
three persons
are seen to exist among the beggars.

What three?

One lacking aspiration,
one aspiring,
one that has passsed beyond aspiring.

And what, beggars,
is the person lacking aspiration?

Here, beggars,
a person has poor ethical standards,
bad form,
wicked-impure-behavior,
secretive works.

A fake shaman,
a pretend shaman.

One not living the godly life
though pretending to do so.

Inwardly putrid,
leaky,
by nature impure.

He hears:

'Sucha one of the beggars,
having destroyed the corrupting influences
has at this time
in this seen thing
through higher knowledge
come to know the
release in heart
release by wisdom
without corrupting influences
and has risen up into
and resides therein.'

But he does not have the thought:

'When will I,
having destroyed the corrupting influences
at that time
in this seen thing
through higher knowledge
come to know the
release in heart
release by wisdom
without corrupting influences
and rise up into
and reside therein?'

This, beggars,
is what is called
a person who is lacking aspirtion.

And what, beggars,
is the person who has aspirations?

Here, beggars,
a beggar has ethical standards,
is of good form.

He hears:

'Sucha one of the beggars,
having destroyed the corrupting influences
has at this time
in this seen thing
through higher knowledge
come to know the
release in heart
release by wisdom
without corrupting influences
and has risen up into
and resides therein.'

And he has this thought:

'When will I,
having destroyed the corrupting influences
at that time
in this seen thing
through higher knowledge
come to know the
release in heart
release by wisdom
without corrupting influences
and rise up into
and reside therein?'

This, beggars,
is what is called
a person who has aspirtion.

And what, beggars,
is the person who has passed beyond aspirations?

Here, beggars,
a beggar is an Arahant,
corrupting influences destroyed.

He hears:

'Sucha one of the beggars,
having destroyed the corrupting influences
has at this time
in this seen thing
through higher knowledge
come to know the
release in heart
release by wisdom
without corrupting influences
and has risen up into
and resides therein.'

But he does not have the thought:

'When will I,
having destroyed the corrupting influences
at that time
in this seen thing
through higher knowledge
come to know the
release in heart
release by wisdom
without corrupting influences
and rise up into
and reside therein?'

Why is that?

Whatever, beggars,
was his earlier aspiration
to destroy the corrupting influences
and at that time
in this seen thing
through higher knowledge
come to know the
release in heart
release by wisdom
without corrupting influences
and rise up into
and reside therein
has been resolved by him.

This, beggars,
is what is called
a person who has passed beyond aspiring.

These, beggars,
are the three persons,
to be seen existing among the beggars.

Cakka-Vatti Suttaṃ

Wheel Turner

[14][pts][bodh][upal] "Even he, beggars,
who is a wheel-turning king,
a law-abiding,
Dhamma king,
even he does not turn the wheel
without having a king."

That said,
a certain beggar
said this to The Lucky Man:

"Who, bhante,
is the king,
the wheel-turning,
law-abiding,
Dhamma king,
follows?"

"Dhamma, beggar."

Here, beggar,
such a king,
a wheel-turning,
law-abiding,
Dhamma king,
relying just on Dhamma,
respecting Dhamma,
esteeming Dhamma,
proudly honoring Dhamma,
with Dhamma as his flag,
with Dhamma as his banner,
making Dhamma pre-eminant,
does not fail to guard and protect
the families within his rule.

And further,
in addition to that, beggar,
such a king,
a wheel-turning,
law-abiding,
Dhamma king,
relying just on Dhamma,
respecting Dhamma,
esteeming Dhamma,
proudly honoring Dhamma,
with Dhamma as his flag,
with Dhamma as his banner,
making Dhamma pre-eminant,
does not fail to guard and protect
those of the ruling class,
the army,
brāhmins and householders,
people living in town, city or country,
wild beasts and birds.

He, then, beggars, that king,
that wheel-turning,
law-abiding,
Dhamma king,
relying just on Dhamma,
respecting Dhamma,
esteeming Dhamma,
proudly honoring Dhamma,
with Dhamma as his flag,
with Dhamma as his banner,
who makes Dhamma pre-eminant, and
does not fail to guard and protect
the families within his rule,
who does not fail to guard and protect
those of the ruling class,
who does not fail to guard and protect
the army,
who does not fail to guard and protect
brāhmins and householders,
who does not fail to guard and protect
people living in town, city or country,
who does not fail to guard and protect
wild beasts and birds he rolls-on the Dhamma-wheel that wheel the rolling of which man living being.
